There are certain experiences in life that don’t live up to the hype.
The Masters is not one of them.
In Episode 13 of the podcast, we break down our trip to The Masters and what it’s actually like walking the grounds at Augusta National. This was my second time going, but this trip hit differently. I got to experience it with my son, and after everything he’s been through, that alone made it special.
But beyond that, Augusta is just… different.
First Impressions of Augusta National
The moment you step on property, it feels surreal.
TV does not do it justice. Not even close.
The biggest surprise? The elevation.
Everyone says it, and you kind of roll your eyes… until you’re there. Then you realize they weren’t exaggerating. Walking Augusta National is like a full workout. Up, down, back up again. By the end of the day, your legs are shot.
Hole 1 alone feels like you’re climbing a hill that never ends.
Why Hole 16 Is the Best Spot at The Masters
If you ever go to the Masters, I’ll save you some time.
Go to Hole 16.
We sat there for hours, and it’s easily the best viewing spot on the course. You get:
- Players coming in from 15
- The par 3 action on 16
- Water shots, crowd reactions, everything
It’s the perfect mix of action and atmosphere.
You could spend your entire day there and not feel like you missed anything.
Masters Food: The Best Deal in Sports
One of the wildest parts of Augusta National is the food.
It feels like you stepped back in time.
- Egg salad sandwich: $1.50
- Pimento cheese sandwich: $1.50
- Drinks: around $2
- Beer: about $6
And it’s not just cheap, it’s actually good.
I’m taking the egg salad all day. We were grabbing multiple sandwiches at a time and just loading up. You can eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner there and barely spend anything.
The whole system is incredibly efficient too. Thousands of people moving through lines and it never feels chaotic.
The Pro Shop Is Absolute Chaos
If you’ve heard about the Masters pro shop, believe it.
It’s madness.
You walk in and it’s basically a free-for-all:
- People grabbing stacks of shirts
- Calling out sizes
- Filling bags as fast as possible
And here’s what most people don’t realize…
A lot of people aren’t buying for themselves.
They’re flipping it.
We’re talking:
- $30 items reselling for $200
- Polos doubling in price online
It’s actually a business for some people.
How Masters Tickets Actually Work
You can’t just go buy Masters tickets.
The primary way is the lottery system, which opens once a year. I’ve entered for years and never won.
Both times I’ve gone, it was because someone gave me tickets.
That’s honestly the reality. Your best shot is knowing someone.
And here’s something important…
I would be very careful buying tickets on the secondary market.
Getting Pulled Aside by Masters Security
Day two, we scan our tickets and immediately get stopped.
“Sir, you’ve been selected.”
What followed was about an hour of waiting and questioning.
They asked:
- Where we got the tickets
- Who gave them to us
- How we knew them
- And multiple times… how much we paid
We didn’t pay for them, and we kept saying that.
Eventually, they let us go.
But here’s the takeaway:
If you spent thousands on resale tickets and something goes wrong, you’re in a tough spot.
Masters Tips for First-Time Visitors
If you’re planning a trip to Augusta, here’s what I’d recommend:
- Walk the entire course early
- Sit at Hole 16 for a while
- Do the pro shop later in the day
- Don’t bring cash (you won’t need it)
- Be ready to walk… a lot
Also, the customer service is the best I’ve ever seen at any event. Every worker, every volunteer, every person in a green jacket is helpful and polite.
It’s a masterclass in how to run an event.
Watching the Pros Up Close
We got to watch guys like Bryson and Rory up close, and it’s different in person.
Bryson stands out.
The speed, the power, the way he interacts with fans. It’s impressive.
Rory is incredible too, but Bryson just hits it different.
We also had a cool moment where a top LPGA player recognized my daughter’s name. That was one of those moments that sticks with you.
The Road Trip to Augusta
We drove from Texas through:
- Louisiana
- Mississippi
- Alabama
- Georgia
- South Carolina
And I’ll just say it…
Louisiana had the worst roads visually.
Texas had the worst roads condition-wise.
Construction never ends.
The Airbnb Disaster Before the Trip
Six days before the Masters, our Airbnb gets canceled.
Already paid for. No warning.
Their excuse? The heat wasn’t working.
We didn’t need heat.
It was pretty obvious what happened. They realized it was Masters week and wanted to rebook it at a higher price.
Thankfully, we got it worked out, but it’s something to be aware of if you’re booking during big events.
The Infamous “Toilet Disaster”
We get back to the Airbnb after a long day.
Something is very wrong with the bathroom.
I mean… disaster-level wrong.
I thought something was seriously wrong with my son.
Turns out…
There was a ceiling fan directly above the toilet pulling moisture and dripping down into it.
It looked like something straight out of a horror movie, but it was just condensation.
We laughed about that one for a long time.
The Weird Stuff No One Talks About
Here’s something I didn’t expect…
The amount of people picking their nose in public.
And making eye contact while doing it.
At the Masters.
I don’t understand it either.
Final Thoughts: Is The Masters Worth It?
Without question, yes.
It exceeded expectations in every way:
- The course
- The atmosphere
- The people
- The experience
It’s not just a golf tournament.
It’s the standard for how events should be run.
And for me personally, getting to experience it with my son made it something I’ll never forget.
